Surface gilding requires an oil based mordant, usually gold size, to be applied to any sound surface to which a metallic leaf or powder (bronzing) is then adhered. The choice of gilded finishes available is vast, as effects and treatments can be applied to all leaf types on top of any pre-coloured size. Glass gilding involves the application of loose leaf to the reverse side of glass using a gelatine solution to produce a 'mirror-like' finish to lettering or designated shapes when viewed from the front.
